Meet The Candidates: Leland Cheung, Lieutenant Governor Candidate

Lt. Governor Leland Cheung

Leland Cheung is a proud son of immigrants. Having been honored to serve as a City Councillor for the City of Cambridge for over five years, he has developed a sheer appreciation for civic engagement and American values.

Leland was first elected to the Council while he was pursuing a Masters in Public Administration at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and an MBA the MIT Sloan School of Management. Not only was he the first academic student to be elected to the Council but the first Asian American in Massachusetts.

Before he participated in civic engagement, he worked as a Senior Associate at Masthead Partners, a Cambridge-based venture capital firm focusing on digital media, mobile, and internet infrastructure. He utilized this work experience to guide his efforts as a board member of the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative and the National League of Cities.

In our interview he discussed his initiatives for Massachusetts, as the next upcoming Lt. Governor, and answered questions from Twitter as well as mine in regards to his personal journey in life and his candidacy.

Our biggest topics of discussion (and where his passion truly lies) is innovation and economy.

Leland tells me first hand that the main reason on why he ran for City Council in the first place was that nobody on the Council was talking about how to make sure that kids, who grew up in Cambridge, have the opportunity to work for Google or Microsoft which were literally located down the street from public housing. As the next Lt. Governor, Leland wants to make sure that the economy is not just benefiting for a few people (who live in the right zipcode), but for everybody–regardless if you have a PhD from MIT, a two year graduate degree or a GED. He wants to create economic opportunity for everyone.

However, the biggest obstacle that he faces, which he also sees in the Commonwealth, is the constant battle between Boston and Cambridge on innovation and economy. As Lt. Governor, he wants to put an end to this nonsense and make sure that everyone in Massachusetts (including Springfield) receives economic opportunity.

Today, Leland is happily married to his wife Yin and is a proud father of their 6 month old infant daughter Lela Marie. He is still currently serving as a City Councillor for Cambridge, but he is also serving as an Executive Committee Member of the Massachusetts Democratic State Committee and a member of the Massachusetts Democratic Platform Drafting Committee. He is also a Commissioner on Governor Patrick’s Asian American Commission and is the Massachusetts State Chair of the Democratic Municipal Officials.

Meet The Candidates: James Arena-DeRosa, Lt Governor Candidate of Massachusetts

Meet The Candidates: James Arena-DeRosa

James was born in Boston and raised in Walpole. Born from a family Italian immigrants, and raised with the concept of making a difference in the lives of others, James always knew that his life as an American citizen was meant for public service.

During his academic years, James attended Xaverian Brothers High School and went on to graduate from Harvard University with a degree in Anthropology. Shortly after graduating college, he then began working to give back to his community and improve the lives of those around him. He became actively involved in local Democratic politics and was trained by the United Farm Workers in community and campaign organizing.

Some of his notable achievements in public service were: Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Commonwealth, Director of Public Advocacy at Oxfam America, SEIU Union Leader, New England Director of the Peace Corps (appointed by the Clinton Administration), and Northeast Regional Administrator for the USDA (appointed by the Obama Administration), which he oversaw 15 federal food and nutrition programs with a $12 billion annual budget.

In our interview, we discussed his initiatives for Massachusetts as the next Lieutenant Governor and his personal journey in life. Our biggest topic of discussion was hunger and nutrition in Massachusetts. He told me that Massachusetts is ranked 48th in the country for school breakfasts! Furthermore, Massachusetts leaves half a billion dollars in already appropriated federal food funds on the table, in addition to meeting hunger and nutrition needs, that could be used for other critical needs. As Lt. Governor, he wants to ensure universal breakfast for every elementary classroom in Massachusetts so that our kids will do better in school, have fewer problems with discipline, and will do better on those standardized tests. He says by feeding those who are hungry, it will boost our economy by buying locally sourced food.

Today he is happily married to Lina Arena with their two sons, Anthony and Alessandro, and continues to be an active member of the community such being a member of the Finance Committee, a Little League Coach, and a photographer for the Holliston High School Theater.

James Arena DeRosa is running to be an advocate for the cities, towns, and underserved communities of Massachusetts.

Motivation Monday: Keep Your Head Up!

It’s Monday, the beginning of a new week, and you need words of motivation to start your week off right.

This week’s words of motivations: Keep Your Head Up!

20140316-183155.jpg

1rid·i·cule (\ˈri-də-ˌkyül\): The act of making fun of someone or something in a cruel or harsh way : harsh comments made by people who are laughing at someone or something.

I was inspired to write this, when I reminisced the difficult years of my childhood–and my young adulthood. My story is not unique nor special to anyone else’s, but I remembered how it felt to be disrespected; to be unappreciated; to be frowned upon; to be talked down to; and to feel lesser than you think are. What helped me the most during those difficult times in my life was essentially turning a deaf ear (two deaf ears in fact) to negative remarks. As naive as it sounds, I loved myself too much to not care what people thought of me.

It’s shame to see how bullying has transcended itself into cyber-bullying; verbal abuse is still abuse! And I remember being one of those kids receiving the full brunt of a negative joke or comment. However, it was my ability to turn two deaf ears towards negative remarks that I am able to celebrate the many blessings and successes that I am enjoying today. Looking back at it now, I am glad that I did not let my peers or their words shape my destiny.

So this week, keep your head up and let negative remarks fall on deaf ears. Don’t let your peers (whether you are a child, teenager, adult, or senior) shape your destiny. You’d be surprise how many people actually enjoy the faults that you were ridiculed for!

To that little boy or girl who is constantly being ridiculed by their peers: do not listen to their words; keep your head up! Time will reveal how special you really are. Take it from me.  –Prince

Weekly Spiritual Digest: Finding your Spiritual Gift

ldsliving.com

Now, dear brothers and sisters, regarding your question about the special abilities the Spirit gives us. I don’t want you to misunderstand this. You know that when you were still pagans, you were led astray and swept along in worshiping speechless idols. So I want you to know that no one speaking by the Spirit of God will curse Jesus, and no one can say Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit.

There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us. A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge. The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing. He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy.

He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have. (1 Corinthians 12:1-11 NLT)

The Book of Corinthians is a letter written by Apostle Paul to help the Christians in Corinth break free from the corruption that was taking place in their homeland. And in doing so, Paul covers a wide variety of topics such as rival factions, incest among believers, public lawsuits between fellow Christians, disorderly conduct, the Lord’s Supper, and the abuses of spiritual gifts in order to show that Christ is the only solution to all of these topics. Throughout his letter, he explains why Jesus’ followers should let Christ shape their lives, beliefs, and values, and why they should not conform to the world around them.

Finding your spiritual gift is something that cannot be found, because only God the Father can choose which gift each person should have. However, what is important is that the same spirit that provides these spiritual gifts (gift of healing, prophesy, wise advice, etc.) also lives inside of you and me.

God works in mysterious ways and he uses us, through the Holy Spirit, to help one another–and to serve his plan. Your spiritual gift is the Holy Spirit that has been given to you by God. The Holy Spirit strengthens your backbone when you are crouched in fear, and gives you guidance when you are lost in the dark.

So this week don’t contemplate on the spiritual gifts that you don’t have. Instead focus on your Holy Spirit–the gift which has been given to you by God–and see where it takes you. It may lead you to post Weekly Spiritual blogs!

Weekly Spiritual Digest: Honor God With Your Body

20140309-130144.jpg

“Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

Have you heard that saying, “Treat your body like a temple?”  If you haven’t, then let this verse serve as a reminder of why our bodies and our souls are so special to us and to God.

In each and everyone of us lies an inexplicable spirit that enables us to feel absolute pain or euphoria. But what triggers those feelings, is how we treat our bodies. If you treat your body like a sewer or act in ways that reflect wickedness, then your body and your spirit will be filthy. But if you treat your body like a temple and act in ways that reflect virtuousness, then your body and your spirit will be clean.

What you consume is what you become.

Eat and consume things (whether it be food, ideas, or knowledge) that complements yourself and God, and wear attire that flatters your body, spirit, and mind–not your wicked nature.

Don’t let advertisements or people defile your body, your natural beauty or your Holy Spirit, which has been given to you by God. Instead, use your body and your beauty to glorify God by keeping your spirit clean and pure!

ThrowBack Thursdays: My Interview w/ Mike Brady, Founder & Producer of the Income Opportunity Expo

Every Thursday, I post a miscellaneous article that I have written in the past or an interview of an extraordinary individual.

This week’s ThrowBack Thursdays: My interview w/ Mike Brady, Founder and Producer of the Income Opportunity Expo.

20140220-162028.jpg

Mike E. Brady is one of the most interesting individuals that you will ever meet in your lifetime. He has hosted and produced PBS broadcast segments, dozens of TV and radio interviews and a variety of talk shows, as well as becoming a filmmaker. He has traveled the world, and holds a college degree from Boston University in geography.

Mike began his career in New York City during the late 1980’s and has independently produced dozens of successful consumer trade shows (Holistic Health Expos, Bridal Shows, Arts & Crafts Expos, Environmental Expos, and World Music Festivals)–attracting tens of thousands of attendees to a broad spectrum of industries in some of the largest and most prestigious hotels, convention centers and venues across the Northeastern region. But what people fail to recognize is how down to earth and compassionate he really is.

When I first met him at the Small Business Expo at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, Ma, he did not in no way perceive himself to be a “hot-shot”–which there were plenty of at the expo; I met him when I just got done introducing myself and my website to a business woman during lunch hour at the cafeteria. When I got up, Mike approached me and said that he was interested in my services and would loved to be featured on my website–he immediately wanted to do an interview!

I was quite surprised by his response because my site at the time didn’t generate a modest value to anyone just yet. However, I still scheduled an interview with him for the following week, we met up, and he began to tell me his life story and his upcoming expo: “Income Opportunity Expo.”

When I sat down with him, I was truly amazed by his accomplishments and travels. But yet he sounded so humble that it was very hard to believe him sometimes. When I asked him, “How do you define success?” He put it simply and said:

“Being comfortable in your own skin, while living in the moment.”

Furthermore, he quotes Ralph Waldo Emerson and says, “To be yourself, in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else, is the greatest accomplishment.”

From my interview not only did I learn a great deal on what “success” is, but his passion towards helping people; Today I am glad that I have documented his passion in our interview together.

Thank you again Mike for the opportunity to interview you and I am so glad that my website has been useful to you. I look forward in doing great things with you and UR Business Network!
