Prince Sefa-Boakye talks to Charlie Davies, US Soccer Player for the New England Revolution

(This interview was recorded on Oct.8th 2014)

Charlie Davies is a local Bostonian and plays for the New England Revolution. He has participated in two World Cups (2008 and 2009) for the U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team and plans to play again in the next World Cup in 2018.

Charlie shared with me his future plans and his recovery from a serious car accident that he was involved in, back in 2009–and this month will mark the 5th year anniversary of escaping certain death. He said it was truly difficult for him because he couldn’t play consecutively as he used to–it took him 2-3 years to fully recover. But now he is making the right steps to getting back in the game and playing with his fellow teammates one more time before the next World Cup!

Playing soccer and being a soccer player is not a job but passion for him. He says, “There is no greater joy than to step on the field, put on your cleats and play with the ball.” He narrated to me his first goal account with the US National Soccer Team–and how that turned into a crucial qualifying goal for one of the World Cups that he was in. The US was playing against Trinidad, in Trinidad, Tobago, when his good friend Jozy Altidore (who is now the striker for the US Men’s National Team) assisted him by making a terrific pass which Charlie tapped the ball right into the goal.

Charlie admits that it was an easy “tap-in” goal but he says, “a goal is a goal!” And he was over the moon with it.

When I asked him to share any aspiring words to my audience, of whom wanted to be like him, he said this to me:

“Through my experience, I would tell them to have faith–to have belief in yourself! Things do not always go well and they don’t always go the way that you want them to go. But you have to stay focused and stay positive! And if you can stay positive and work hard then you can achieve many things that people think that you can never achieve. You will prove yourself wrong and you will prove doubters wrong. But most importantly don’t take life for grant it because anything could be taken away from you in an instant.”
