Talk Tuesdays w/ Daniel Koh, Chief of Staff to the Mayor of Boston

dan kohAs part of my radio show, I have a special segment called “Talk Tuesdays” where I sit down and talk with an interesting individual–who is either a politician, educator, entrepreneur, or lawyer. And on this special segment, I have invited Daniel Koh, Chief of Staff to the current mayor of Boston (Marty Walsh), to share his personal story of public service and how he landed the job of a lifetime!

Daniel Koh was raised in Andover, Massachusetts–born in Brigham Women’s Hospital. He received his MBA from Harvard Business School and has worked as a Chief of Staff, to the media maven Arianna Huffington, for the Huffington Post. Having only served six months for the Mayor, he has already established himself to be a trustworthy adviser and is the youngest Chief of Staff (29 years of age) to oversee 18,000 employees today!

In our interview, Dan tells me just how lucky and humble he is to serve for the great city of Boston; and how he wakes up every morning (energized) to find new ways to make his city even better. When I asked him the question, “When was your first call to public service?” He answers by telling a story of a 16 year old boy–and how that boy made a difference in his community (enacting a smoking ban) by speaking up. That 16 year old boy happened to be Dan himself. That experience has not only shaped his life dramatically, but taught him the power of speaking up–and how one person can truly make a difference.

Today Dan is working very closely with the Mayor of Boston to create a robust summer jobs program; affordable housing for middle class families in the city of Boston; a strong public school education for the kids of Boston; and innovative districts, where renovation and construction will be the forefront to creating tourism and jobs in the city.

He has a beautiful girlfriend which he has loved dearly for the past five years and recommends the Temazcal (on the South Boston Waterfront) for great chips and guacamole in the summer.
