It’s Monday, the beginning of a new week, and you need words of encouragement to start off your week right.
This week’s words of motivation: Edit Your Life!
In this 3 minute TED talk video, we see writer and founder of eco-blog TreeHugger.com, Graham Hill, give a revolutionary talk on “less stuff;” and how too much space can make us less happy. In doing so, he lays out three rules of how to Edit Your Life
What I found most interesting, from Graham Hill’s TED talk on “space,” was his ability to use props, pictures, statistics, and common knowledge to convince us all that happiness is achievable, when we “edit” the unnecessary clutter in our lives; saving money and the planet. Furthermore, what I found really fascinating–which really cemented his presentation–was how he was able to “edit” his Manhattan apartment to fit everything he really needed in his life, without adding more space: office, dinner table for 10, coffee table, guests beds, bedrooms, and a movie theater–all in one room.
SIDENOTE: Who would’ve thought that folding a bed can ADD extra space to your apt?–it especially makes room for guests to have coffee or dinner.
What really struck a chord with me was this:
“It is so easy for us to “edit” the people in our lives, but it is physically impossible to “edit” the personal junk that we leave behind in our homes?
Would it make it more simpler, if junk were to talk back at us that we can throw them away? My point being is this, if we can “edit” our social circles (without killing the environment), then most certainly we can do the same in our own living spaces.
So this week, practice having less stuff. Edit Your Life, by taking the things that you don’t need in your home out, and make room for the things that really matter. Doing this, you will save both your money, the planet, and your sanity. When you wake up every morning, this week, say this to yourself:
“What can I do to get ‘less stuff’ to make room for the good stuff?”
