It’s Monday, the beginning of a new week, and you need words of empowerment to start your week off right.
This week’s words of motivation: Self-Respect via Non-Violence.
In this video we see young Gandhi (depicted from the original movie Gandhi), with a full set of hair, discussing a new law with his fellow Indians and British policemen at a town hall meeting. And what Gandhi is discussing is how this new law undermines dignity of Indians everywhere–subjugating themselves to injustice.
I first came across this video, when I was in college–studying for my exams. And what drew me to the video was the music, and how well it blended with Gandhi’s speech. One scene that I love, which gave the music a dramatic rise, was when one of his fellow brothers became restless and questioned Gandhi’s methods. However, Gandhi stood brave and tall, and reminded him and everyone else that non-violence and civil disobedience was the only way to fight this new law–and most importantly gain SELF-RESPECT. When he told everyone that he will be willing to give up his body, but not his obedience, he received an outstanding standing ovation.
And so this week, practice Self-Respect with yourself and with others via Non-Violence. It takes more courage to be Non-Violent than it is to be Violent and lose your Self-Respect.
